Midwestern section ASAS 1992 outstanding young scientist - teaching
Article Abstract:
Dr Mark Russell received the Midwestern Section American Society of Animal Science's 1992 Outstanding Young Scientist for Teaching award. Dr Russell obtained his PhD from the University of Illinois. He joined the Animal Sciences Faculty of Purdue University in 1982 and has since been promoted to Associate Professor. He is active in the horse industry, focusing his work on improving vital management procedures and on the improvement of the athletic ability of horses through application of nutritional and genetic principles. As a teacher at Purdue, Dr Russell is well-liked by students because of his combination of enthusiasm, compassion, knowledge and experience.

Article Abstract:
Dr Jim L. Nelssen received the Midwestern Section American Society of Animal Science's 1992 Most Outstanding Young Scientist for Extension award. Dr Nelssen holds a PhD from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In 1991, he initiated Vision 2000, an innovative extension program which identifies and addresses factors affecting profitability in the swine industry. Its work in computerized record-keeping and best-cost formulation has made Kansas very competitive in the swine industry. A prolific researcher, Nelssen is one of only three university scientists in the US who have been selected by the swine industry as 'Pacesetters for the Decade of the '90s.'

Article Abstract:
Dr David Harmon received the Midwestern Section American Society of Animal Science's 1992 Outstanding Young Scientist for Research award. Dr Harmon earned his PhD from the University of Nebraska. His research on ruminal digestion and fermentation has improved the understanding of how specific nutrients from the gut become available for absorption and metabolism. One of his most significant works is a series of experiments which characterized intestinal disappearence and portal appearance of sugars. Dr Harmon is an Associate Professor at the Kansas State University where he is actively engaged in research, teaching and guidance of MS and PhD students.
