Mitochondria and the death of oocytes
Article Abstract:
Small numbers of mitochondria were microinjected into mouse oocytes to test whether mitochondria can influence oocyte fate. The cells were prevented from undergoing apoptosis. One function of prenatal germ cell loss may be to remove oocytes with defective mitochondrial genomes, but such oocytes are only a small percentage of the total oocyte pool lost before birth. Additional functions for prenatal oocyte death must therefore be considered.

Glioma stem cells promote radioresistance by preferential activation of the DNA damage response
Article Abstract:
A study shows that the cancer stem cells contribute to glioma radioresistance through preferential activation of the DNA damage checkpoint response and an increase in DNA repair capacity. The results have indicated that CD133 (Prominin-1)-positive tumour cells represent the cellular population that grants glioma radioresistance and could be the source of tumour recurrence after radiation.

A sperm ion channel required for sperm motility and male fertility
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the role of the calcium-permeation pathway in increasing male fertility levels in humans are discussed. Particular attention is given to descriptions of a sperm channel called CatSper which is able to increase sperm motility.
