Mitochondrial DNA phylogeography of the North American brown bear and implications for conservation
Article Abstract:
Four clades, or major mitochondrial DNA phylogeographic groups, were identified for the brown bear (Ursus arctos) of North America. Three groups with evolutionary importance for conservation have been identified: one in the Alaskan islands of Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof; a second covering mainland Alaska, Kodiak Island and northern Canada; and a third comprised of southern British Columbia, southern Alberta, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. The species appears to have limited gene flow mediated by females.

The Role of Hybrid Vigor in the Replacement of Pecos Pupfish by Its Hybrids with Sheepshead Minnow
Article Abstract:
The article emphasizes the importance of mechanisms that retard or promote gene flow between divergent animal populations, and how anthropogenic activities can alter these mechanisms and negatively impact biodiversity. The threat to Pecos pupfish via hybridization with sheepshead minnow is used as an example.

Effects of Habitat Fragmentation on Effective Population Size in the Endangered Rio Grande Silvery Minnow
Article Abstract:
The impact of diversion dams on Hybognathus amarus has resulted in significant losses of annual reproduction effort via mortality and emigration, reducing the species population to critically low levels.
