Mitotic treasures in the nucleolus
Article Abstract:
Amon and colleagues and Shuo and colleagues have studied how the cell regulates exist from mitosis and re-entry into the G1 stage, and found that sequestration of Cdc14, a protein phosphatase in the nucleolus, is the key. They used immunolocalization to investigated where Cdc14 is found during the cell cycle, and saw that Cdc14 was dramatically relocalized in the nucleus. They used a protein-interaction screen to find what may anchor Cdc14 to the nucleolus, and found that it binds to Cfi1, a protein whose localization overlaps with Cdc14 patterns.

Marking of active genes on mitotic chromosomes
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigating the marking of active genes on mitotic chromosomes have analyzed DNA at transcription start sites during mitosis in vivo. It was established that a protein is necessary for mitosis-specific melting of the c-myc P2 start site. It is not likely that simple sequence recognition controls direct formation of marker complexes at active promoters. It is possible that the mitotic marker acts as an accessory factor to maintain a segment of DNA already configured for transcription.
