Molecular and genetic damage in humans from environmental pollution in Poland
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted of the molecular impact of exposure to environmental pollution on rural and urban Polish groups. Six biological markers were used to establish that exposure to increased concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) correlates significantly with increases in carcinogenic PAH-DNA adducts. Chromosomal aberrations, increased ras oncogene expression and sister chromatid exchanges were also shown to be positively correlated with increased exposure. Thus exposure to high PAH levels may result in chromosomal mutation which is relevant to reproductive and cancer risk.

Action spectrum for DNA damage in alfalfa lowers predicted impact of ozone depletion
Article Abstract:
Research using alfalfa seedlings indicates that plants may not be especially vulnerable to the DNA-damaging effects of increasing ultraviolet radiation due to diminishing stratospheric ozone. The action spectrum or wavelength-dependent sensitivity at which alfalfa DNA-injury occurs in the form of cyclobutyl pyrimidine dimer induction was found to be at the unexpectedly long wavelength of 365 nm rather than 280 to 313 nm as had been postulated in previous forecasts of how ozone depletion will affect plants.

The radiation equation
Article Abstract:
A study of the intensity of the ultra-violet radiation (UVR) around the globe due to ozone layer depletion shows that continuous depletion of ozone will soon lead to rise in temperature in some moderate and high-altitude locations. Results suggest that for some areas the UVR levels have already crossed the threshold values. The study was conducted using satellite-based measurements of ozone and cloudiness.
