Molecular identification of microorganisms associated with parthenogenesis
Article Abstract:
Microorganisms inherited cytoplasmically have been found to have a role in female insect parthenogenesis and cytoplasmic incompatibility. Genetic studies have shown incompatibility organisms to be closely related even when from diverse insect families. They belong to the alpha subdivision of Proteobacteria. The bacteria associated with parthenogenesis in Hymenoptera wasps are also of this subdivision and genetic studies show similarity with incompatibility bacteria. Both types of microorganism interfere with mitotic division at an early stage.

Parthenogenesis in Komodo dragons
Article Abstract:
Genetic fingerprinting is used to identify parthenogenetic offspring produced by two female Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis), which were kept at separate institutions and isolated from males. Parthenogenesis, the production of offspring without fertilization by a male, in wild Komodo dragons are found to be adaptive, given the viable offspring are always male and that sexual reproduction can resume, although between related individuals, in a colony founded by a single unfertilized female.
