Molecular variation and evolutionarily significant units in the endangered Gila topminnow
Article Abstract:
One of the most significant challenges in conservation biology is determining evolutionarily significant units (ESU) in endangered species. Genetic information is usually used as the basis for recommendations of ESU, but it should be used in conjunction with other information. Studies of the Gila topminnow in Arizona show the minnows from one population were genetically differentiated enough to be considered an independent ESU.

Evolutionary significant units, distinct population segments, and the Endangered Species Act: reply to pennock and Dimmick
Article Abstract:
The adoption of evolutionary significant units (ESUs) will not impede the scope or efficacy of the Endangered Species Act. ESUs promote flexibility in addressing conservation issues by assuming a holistic approach to identification, behavior and demography. Rather than fostering generalized protection policies, ESUs allow policies to be tailored to specific needs of individual species.

Validity of the red wolf: response to Roy et al
Article Abstract:
Studies support the biological hypothesis that the red wolf is systematically valid. Despite contentions that the red wolf is an ancestral to the gray wolf and the coyote, these are not backed sufficiently by scientific research. Hybridization has been advanced by individuals and groups who oppose reintroduction of the red wolf as a conservation strategy.
