Molecule, assemble thyself!
Article Abstract:
Self-assembly refers to the spontaneous formation of aggregates out of a mixture of component molecules. A team led by Jean-Marie Lehn at Strasbourg University has successfully synthesized a series of compounds which make use of the chelate effect to self-assemble into a cylindrical structure. X-ray anlaysis of the resulting helical structure showed that the columnar supports of the cylinder are skewed around the cylinder in a triple-helical manner. Similar techniques have been used to create a molecular box. These molecular structures may have applications in the miniaturization of electrical components.

Electroluminescence in polymer films
Article Abstract:
Construction of tunnelling-induced electroluminescence on polymer films were possible as shown in this experiment. Electroluminescence could be produced by tunnelling injection from the tip of scanning tunnelling microscope. The cathodoluminescence spectrum equivalence has confirmed that electroluminescence came from the polymer film. There is no intrinsic limit noted to achieve electroluminescent emission at current densities which should the conditions for the optical gain establishment.

The electronic structure at the atomic scale of ultrathin gate oxides
Article Abstract:
It is possible to use electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope to calculate the chemical composition and electronic structure, at the atomic scale, across gate oxides as thin as 1nm. EELS was used to map the unoccupied electronic density of states by site, atom-column and atomic species. It was established that there is a fundamental limit of 0.7nm (four silicon atoms across) on the thinnest usable silicon dioxide gate dielectric.
