Mouse opens door for study of autoimmune diseases
Article Abstract:
Clinical trials have suggested that the drug may alleviate symptoms of autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system attacks the body's own cells. To test this idea, the company based in South San Francisco has created a mouse model that could help to speed up research on such diseases.

Unanimous vote approves tweak to smallpox genome

The World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory Committee on Variola Virus Research voted in favor of modifying genes in the smallpox virus, and in the vaccine strains that eradicated the disease from the globe. The advisors believe the moves would speed research on smallpox treatments.

Trial analysis questions use of antidepressants in children

The trials of paroxetine, fluoxetine, and sertraline in children have reported that the drugs help them to overcome depression. Graham Emslie, a psychiatrist, explains that cognitive behavioral therapy is the only treatment that will work better than antidepressants.
