NIH budget prospect bright despite political stalemate
Article Abstract:
Republicans in the US House of Representatives have postponed efforts to design a bill to fund the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2000. Congressman John Porter's own bill contained an 8.5% boost for the NIH, but the bill was not heard. However Congress has not allowed the figure for the agency to fall below that recommended by Porter who is an advocate of biomedical research.

Congress turns NIH budget into a political football
Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has had a 9.1% budget increased proposed by a Congressional subcommittee. This would be at the expense of certain social and education programmes. However, a corresponding Senate subcommittee has to agree on its own bill, and each version has to be reconciled to be approved by both legislative houses.
