Labs collide over rival tritium schemes
Article Abstract:
The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California is developing a limited inertial confinement fusion machine to test a potential substitute for the particle accelerator under development at the Los Alamos National Laboratory to produce tritium for defense purposes. According to John Nuckolls, former director of LLNL, the confinement fusion machine should be built instead of the accelerator if tritium is not required immediately. Paul Lisowski, head of the accelerator research team, feels that confinement fusion is not a proven technology and dependence on it for national security is risky.

Brookhaven contractor is sacked over tritium leak
Article Abstract:
The laboratory services company Associated Universities Incorporated that manages Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York, has been dismissed for bad management and inadequate laboratory standards. The US Department of Energy claims that the contractor, who has managed the site since 1947, is responsible for the leakage of radioactive tritium from the High Flux Beam Reactor. A total inspection of the facility will be made by the Environmental Protection Agency in Jul 1997 to ascertain the full extent of management inadequacies.

Tritium leak at US reactor sparks crisis for neutron source users
Article Abstract:
The closure of the High Flux Beam Reactor at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, NY, has left researchers scrambling for access to other neutron sources worldwide. The closure follows the discovery of major leaks of tritium in ground water near the reactor. Officials at Brookhaven are optimistic that the leak will be plugged and the facility reopened soon. Other officials, however, feel that the erosion of public confidence over the laboratory's safety may delay the reopening.
