NIH makes room for the unconventional after Congress mandates new programme
Article Abstract:
Congress mandated that the National Institutes of Health devote $2 million yearly to determining whether unconventional medical practices have any genuine therapeutic effect. The addition to NIH's budget, for which Senator Thomas Harkin was primarily responsible, prompted the establishment of a new office, directed by Stephen Groft, which will employ teams of medical investigators charged with evaluating claims made for homeopathy and other alternative practices. However, some medical groups are criticizing the appropriation as a misuse of scarce research funds.

Yeltsin's ecology adviser chips away at a sorry past
Article Abstract:
Alexei Yablokov is the advisor to Boris Yeltsin on ecology and public health. Yablokov left as director of the Institute of Developmental Biology in Moscow in 1989 to take the post in government. Though he has a small staff, he can often influence the funding of other agencies. He faces a struggle since ecological interests are often opposed to economic and political necessities. Yablokov believes the country should drop its nuclear power program in favor of gas turbine generation which he argues will be sufficient in a civilian rather than military economy.

The West gropes for ways to help
Article Abstract:
The American Physical Society's Apr, 1992 meeting dealt with how the Western countries could best aid the survival of science in the former Soviet republics. Financial and material aid is vital if the valuable research of Soviet scientists is to continue. The meeting's participants agreed that research institutes in both the US and the former USSR must be innovative in how assistance is provided. One proposed approach is to acquaint Soviet scientists with Western methods of funding research.
