Nanometre assembly lines
Article Abstract:
'Ordered Materials by Design' was the subject of the Materials Research Society Fall Meeting held in Boston, MA, Nov 30 to Dec 4, 1992. Participants learned of the latest progress in supramolecular manipulation, a line of research that is expected to produce innovative thin films, ordered liquids, polymers, large clusters and other structures. These new materials include liquid crystals developed from bowl-shaped tungsten-oxo calix(4)arene complexes and the biggest metal chalcogenide cluster ever discovered.

Probing the transition state
Article Abstract:
Bradley Moore and colleagues have devised a theory of unimolecular reactions that allows them to determine the molecular structure of chemicals at transition states during kinetic changes. Their experiments on CH2CO changing to CH2 in its 3B1 state and CO measure the rate constants for the vibrationally excited chemical's dissociation when the production of CH2 in the 3B1 state is almost complete. Moore has observed the energy level patterns during the transition to determine the molecular structure.

Knot tied around an octahedral metal centre
Article Abstract:
A new technique for the preparation of small-molecule knots is presented. This approach involves a metal ion being added to a presynthesized oligomer which has appropriate recognition sites that should prompt spontaneous folding into an open knot.
