Natural Josephson junctions
Article Abstract:
Single crystals of the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) can be made to contain Josephson tunneling. The Josephson effect occurs when a thin layer of insulation comes between two samples of superconducting material. Kleiner and colleagues have achieved an important milestone by identifying a new superconductor capable of containing a Josephson tunnel junction. Several features of BSCCO indicate true Josephson behavior of which the most crucial was unique interaction with microwaves.
