Nature's roots in Japan
Article Abstract:
The science periodical Nature began reporting on scientific events in Japan in the 1870s when European engineers and scientists were helping to establish Japan's first universities and research institutions. The first reports by Japanese writers were printed in the 1880s. Since then Nature has regularly featured the work of Japanese researchers. In 1972 Nature published a 34-page survey of Japanese science. In 1987 Nature Japan KK was established to publish the journal in Japan. This background gives the editors of Nature a strong interest in suggesting how Japanese science can be improved.

China still hopeful ten years on
Article Abstract:
China is confident it will realize its ambitious goal for science and technology, despite the wealth of problems facing its economy. It has already introduced dramatic changes to its education sector to elevate the level of literacy of the entire population. However, the initiative is mired with several problems such as the lack of a standard and unified language script and low student population especially in the college level. Furthermore, Chinese universities need to develop flexibility and provide incentives to students to attract scholars.
