Near-field probing of vibrational absorption for chemical microscopy
Article Abstract:
Commercial Si cantilevered tips metallized with a 100-nm layer of gold have been used to show the use of the aperture-less approach to scanning near-field optical microscopy. The infrared scattering was modeled by considering the electrical dipole movement of the tip along with its mirror image in the sample. It was possible to produce experimental evidence of enhanced infrared absorption mediated by the aperture-less near-field probe tip, and it has been demonstrated that infrared vibrational microscopy can be undertaken at high resolution.

Article Abstract:
Hilgenfeldt and colleagues have explained the tiny spot of light coming from a solitary, sonically driven bubble, first observed in 1989. The single-bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) phenomenon requires stability to produce the clock-like synchronicity, which relies on the behaviour of the bubble when it is relatively large. However the light emission occurs when the bubble is near to its smallest size.
