Nest desertion by blue-gray gnatcatchers in association with brown-headed cowbird parasitism
Article Abstract:
The blue-gray gnatcatcher, 'Polioptila caerulea,' deserts its nest in response to parasitism by the brown-headed cowbird, 'Molothrus ater.' Nest desertion seems to be an effective strategy to avoid parasitism and increase fitness. Deserting gnatcatchers usually obtain clutches free from cowbird disturbance. However, nest desertion response was inconsistent and the factor that triggers it is unclear.

Local gradients of cowbird abundance and parasitism relative to livestock grazing in a western landscape
Article Abstract:
Research shows that cowbird populations and resultant parasitism levels can be reduced by managing cowbird feeding sites, as cowbird impacts decreased as distance from feeding sites increased. Data were obtained from livestock grazing areas in northeastern New Mexico, home to both cowbirds and its common host, Vireo plumbeus.

Effects of historic livestock grazing on vegetation at Chaco Culture National Historic Park, New Mexico
Article Abstract:
Research on vegetation dynamics at New Mexico's Chaco Culture National Historic Park shows that plant species richness is lower in sites under current grazing practices than those under long-term protection. Rather than species invasion, grazing instead may account for composition of plant communities.
