Neville Mott (1905-96)
Article Abstract:
Neville Mott who received the 1977 physics Nobel Prize jointly with J.H. van Vleck and Philip Anderson died on August 8 1996 and will be forever remembered for his significant contributions to theoretical physics especially the concept of the Mott insulator. Mott researched in the fields of radioastronomy and molecular biology and built up condensed-matter theory as Cavendish Professor in Cambridge. Mott was knighted in 1962 and accorded the Companion of Honour in 1995. His contributions extend to the fields of semiconductor physics, rectification, and dislocations.

Experimental evidence for a two-dimensional quantized Hall insulator
Article Abstract:
Vanishing conductivities in materials with a band gap, result in diverging resistivities, although other insulators exhibit more complex behaviour, especially in the presence of a high magnetic field. Magnetoresistance diverges as temperatures approach absolute zero, although the transverse resistance remains finite. Experimental evidence for such a Hall insulator is reported in a two-dimensional electron system.

Electronic reconstruction at an interface between a Mott insulator and a band insulator
Article Abstract:
The electronic reconstruction is the fundamental issue for the new field of correlated-electron surface/interface science. The theoretical study of an interface between a strongly correlated Mott insulator and a band insulator is presented.
