New Zealand scientists seek to revive political fortunes
Article Abstract:
Scientists and academicians in New Zealand are soliciting the support of political parties campaigning for the Oct. 12, 1996 general election for increased funding for research, especially for universities. While R&D spending has been slowly rising, scientists remain worried about the effects of the cost-cutting on the scientific and academic communities. The New Zealand Assn. of Scientists and the Royal Society of New Zealand have petitioned for the return of public funding to its level before cutbacks were made. Since 1981, government funding for research has decreased by 30%.

New Zealand puts its science to profit
Article Abstract:
Mixed views are being expressed about the repercussions of the New Zealand government's decision in 1992 to make wide-reaching changes to its science policy. Under the new system, public organizations are divided into policy organizations, purchasing organizations, which provide funds, and providers, which are research organizations. Research is now regarded as a commodity, and science is strictly controlled. Some observers fear that the government will place a ceiling on financial support in 1998, thus undermining recent progress.
