New drug law to speed scientific review
Article Abstract:
Congress passed a law in Oct 1992 to empower the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to collect fees from pharmaceutical firms for accelerating the drug approval process. The FDA has been under pressure from AIDS groups and others to speed up the testing of potentially life-saving drugs. However, the FDA complained that it lacked sufficient personnel to test the drugs more quickly. The drug companies agreed to pay the fees in the belief that faster approval will be more profitable in the long run. The FDA will charge $100,000 per application in 1992 and $233,000 per application by 1997.

Cattle movements and bovine tuberculosis in Great Britain
Article Abstract:
The movements as recorded in the Cattle Tracing System data archive, and particularly those from areas where bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is reported, consistently outperform environmental, topographic and other anthropogenic variables as the main predictor of disease occurrence. Simulation distribution model for 2002 and 2003, incorporating all predictor categories, are presented and used to project distributions of 2004 and 2005.
