Japan reacts uneasily to nuclear plan for meeting carbon cuts

Article Abstract:

There is tension in Japan about the plans to tackle global warming which requires the active promotion of nuclear energy to help cut greenhouse gas emissions. The plans require the amount of electricity generated by nuclear power to grow by 50% by 2010, but the electricity industry claims that such an increase is impossible. The public is also sensitive about nuclear safety following a series of accidents and subsequent cover-ups at nuclear facilities operated by the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC).

Greenhouse talks edge towards targets

Article Abstract:

The 7th round of international discussions on the implementation of the Rio climate treaty of 1992 has resulted in little public progress being made towards a binding pact on targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The position of Japan on the matter continues to be ambiguous. The US Senate warned against exempting any developing country from its obligations under the pact, which it would have to approve.
