Dynamic instabilities and memory effects in vortex matter
Article Abstract:
A model, derived from studies of the current distribution over single crystals of NbSe(sub2), was based on a competition between a disordered vortex phase injection at the sample edges, and dynamic annealing. The resulting spatial dependence of the disordered vortex systems acts as an active memory of the previous history.

Observation of smectic and moving-Bragg-glass phases in flowing vortex lattices
Article Abstract:
The characteristic that defines the superconducting state is its capability to transmit electric currents without loss, although some parts of the process are not fully understood, particularly the critical current. A new study investigates flowing vortex lattices showing evidence of transition using a magnetic decoration technique. Details of the study are presented.

Observation of mesoscopic vortex physics using micromechanical oscillators
Article Abstract:
Magnetic fields are known to penetrate type II superconductors in the form of quantized superconducting vortices. Recent research has concentrated on collective properties of many interacting vortices. The dynamics of single vortices in micrometre-sized samples of the superconductor 2H-NbSe(sub2) were resolved using a silicon micromachined mechanical resonator. Measurements at and just above Hc1 revealed a spectrum of sharp, irreversible vortex rearrangements. The sharp features became reversible at higher fields, indicating a new regime of vortex dynamics.
