Opening up Ca2+ stores with InsP3
Article Abstract:
The mechanism through which InsP3 releases stores of Ca2+ is not understood and so various researchers are attempting to discover elements of it. One group found that low-affinity Ca2+-sensitive dye inhibits Ca2+ release when in high concentrations. Another group determined that Ca2+ stores are heterogeneous in how they react to InsP3, suggesting necessary revisions to the complex kinetic InsP3 receptor behavior models. However, another group contests the heterogeneous and dye results, alleging faulty experiment controls, contaminating the results with the Ca2+-mediated feedback effect.

Molecular characterization of a neuronal low-voltage-activated T-type calcium channel
Article Abstract:
The identification of a neuronal T-type channel is reported, using a cloning strategy. An expressed sequence tag (EST) was expressed, which was then used to clone a full-length complementary DNA from rate brain. The human gene was mapped to chromosome 17q22 and the mouse gene to chromosome 11. It is concluded that the channel is a low-voltage-activated T-type calcium channel.
