Optimizing visual landmarks: two- and three-dimensional minimal landscapes
Article Abstract:
Experimental study of the minimal conditions required by golden hamsters to choose a homing direction through two- and three-dimensional configurations shows that landmark panorama predominates over dead reckoning in controlling homing direction only when it contains a vertical feature aligned with the apex of a two-dimensional, continuous background pattern. A solid cylinder present across the background pattern or its two-dimensional projection on the pattern serves minimally to control homing. Effectiveness of landmark panorama is independent of depth.

A loft with a view: exposure to a natural landscape during development may encourage adult pigeons to use visual landmarks during homing
Article Abstract:
Experimental studies of the effects of exposure to a natural visual landscape during development of homing pigeons, Columba livia, show that exposure to different visual cues encourages adult pigeons to use visual landmarks during homing. The choice of homing mechanism is influenced by access to visual and olfactory stimuli during development. A clear view of the natural landscape improves the homing speed of pigeons.

Chick hunger and begging affect parental allocation of feedings in pigeons
Article Abstract:
A study of the nature of parental feeding in pigeons revealed direct correlations between parents' food distribution and hunger levels in their offspring. Starved squabs who indulged in begging received better parental care in the form of enhanced feeding, thereby illustrating begging to be a form of intra-blood competition for parental feeding.
