C36, a new carbon solid
Article Abstract:
The arc-discharge method can be used to synthesize the solid form of C36. Arcing runs in 400 torr helium were repeated to produce bulk amounts of C36 suitable for purification. Two methods were then used to separate C36 from the remaining toluene-insoluble material. Further research will consider whether it is possible to made C36 conducting with a sufficient density of states at the Fermi level, thus allowing high-temperature superconductivity with a transition temperature considerably greater than that of intercalated C60.

Making waves with electrons
Article Abstract:
An experiment which used scanning tunneling microscopes (STMs) to study the wave nature of electrons shows the possibilities that these tools may open in the study of quantum-mechanical interference events. STM observation was made possible by artificially confining electrons so that they are moving in a two-dimensional plane. STM applications can be extended to the study of metallic surface defects and electron-adsorbate interactions.

Imaging standing waves in a two-dimensional electron gas
Article Abstract:
Scanning tunnelling microscopy was used to observe the standing wave patterns and local density states of copper (II). The electrons were artificially confined to achieve a two-dimensional gas state. Analysis of these wave patterns revealed the magnitude of surface state dispersion and electron interactions in the surface scattering site. The occurrence of standing waves in the local density of states was discussed.
