Orienting asymmetries in rhesus monkeys: the effect of time-domain changes on acoustic perception
Article Abstract:
Hemispheric bias underlies the acoustic perception of adult rhesus monkeys Macaca mulatta. This was concluded in a study of whether asymmetries in perception are sensitive to changes in the temporal characteristics of the monkeys' calls. Results reveal that for some call types within the rhesus repertoire, temporal properties provide crucial information about whether the signal is conspecific or not. The left hemisphere of the brain is found to play a dominant role in this processing task.

Processing vocal signals for recognition during antiphonal calling in tamarins
Article Abstract:
The tamarins with manipulated and unmanipulated combination long calls (CLCs) are presented using the tamarins' natural vocal response to hearing their species-specific CLC and both the number of antiphonal responses and the latency to produce an antiphonal call are measured. Recognition of the call type and recognition of the caller occur in separate computational stages of signal processing.

Asymmetries in the timing of facial and vocal expressions by rhesus monkeys: implications for hemispheric specialization
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning an analysis of the timing asymmetries of the motor actions which are associated with vocal and facial expressions in the rhesus monkey. The implications for right hemisphere dominance are discussed.
