Clues in the p53 murder mystery
Article Abstract:
Recent research has provided more information on the apoptosis response to oncosuppressor protein p53. More understanding of this response would aid our understanding of cancer drug therapies and the work of ionizing radiation. Expression of p53 often leads to cell death by apoptosis but some injured cells survive in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. The reason for the different responses is not fully understood. Research by K. Polyak and colleagues has revealed a methodology which can find p53-dependent transcripts which could be death-specific.

S-nitrosylation regulates apoptosis
Article Abstract:
The balance between apoptosis and necrosis is controlled by nitric oxide (NO)-mediated S-nitrosylation of the cysteine-containing enzymes which mediate apoptosis. Research focusing on the effects of NO donors on cell death, tissue-transglutaminase activity and poly(ADP ribose)-polymerase proteolysis found that S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine releases 60 nM free NO at 1 mM concentration. Low micromolar concentrations of free NO in cells can be produced from millimolar concentrations of pharmacological NO donors.
