Packet jams clog international highways
Article Abstract:
The performance of the Internet is severely affected by traffic congestion on the international links. Data on the Internet are transmitted as packets that often compete for access to transcontinental cables leading to traffic congestion. Information traffic congestion and data packet dumping have become quite common on international routes. Research organizations are concerned that increasing the bandwidth may not decrease congestion and improve performance. Other factors such as desktop connections, bad protocol designs, and underpowered servers also causes poor performance.

Chair of GMO panel resigns over maize
Article Abstract:
French human geneticist Axel Kahn has vacated his post as Biomolecular Engineering Commission chair. He explained that his action is in protest of the French government's banning of the cultivation of a transgenic maize produced in the US by Ciba-Geigy. The modified maize contains a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis which makes it resistant to the European corn borer. Kahn plans to lead activities against 'scientific racism and genetic determinism.'
