Panel seeks fresh course for ocean research
Article Abstract:
The US Commission on ocean policy had called for the establishment of a National Ocean Council at the White House, to coordinate the $7 billion that the government spends each year on ocean management, research and education. But the commission rejected calls for an independent ocean research agency to replace the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is part of the Department of Commerce.

Scientists as policy-makers
Article Abstract:
The relation between science and policy is clearly examined, some countries are promoting interactions between scientists and policy-makers at the national level. In the United States, opportunities for scientists interested in policy often follow more direct paths.

The Pew Oceans commission recommends the creation of an independent national oceans agency. This agency will prevent harm from overfishing, ocean pollution and invasive species.
