Partners restore rare serpentine ecosystem
Article Abstract:
The US Fish and Wildlife Service's Chesapeake Bay Field Office has linked with the Maryland Dept of Natural Resources' Heritage and Biodiversity Program and the Maryland/District of Columbia chapter of The Nature Conservancy to restore the Soldier's Delight Natural Environment Area, the largest serpentine grassland in the whole of North America. This site has at least 28 state-listed threatened or endangered species. Restoration work has included removing large, invasive conifers and controlled burning to maintain grassland and savanna communities.

Ecosystem education
Article Abstract:
Successful ecosystem management of endangered species requires an educational system that will teach people how to appreciate the beauty of nature and understand nature's complex workings. The present educational system sorely lacks such an ecological orientation. An educational system that teaches love for nature holds the key to public involvement in efforts to save the environment as well as producing professionals devoted to holistic approaches to conservation. A model for such an ecosystem approach to education is presented.

Ecosystem showcase
Article Abstract:
The National Wildlife Refuge managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has a collection of unique and vital animal and plant habitats. The Refuge plays a key role in maintaining ecological integrity, biological reservoirs, and provides habitats for several endangered species. Its most important role is that of rehabilitating degenerated FWS lands and conducting experiments. Refuge has an important role in implementing initiatives such as water storage, removal of unwanted weeds, and improving habitats.
