Patterns of food storing by black-capped chickadees suggest a mnemonic hypothesis
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to understand the food storing behaviour of free-ranging black-capped chickadees, Parus atricapullus, in relation to their ability to acquire and store information for cache recovery. The results revealed flocks clustering around a certain orientation located in short distances from the feeder during certain days. This suggests that birds used a common set of landmarks to remember their caching sites. A hypothesis explaining the birds' behavior is provided.

Context determines the sex appeal of male zebra finch song
Article Abstract:
The conditions under which playbacks of male zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata, song stimulated reproduction in females were studied. Findings showed an increase in estrogen levels after egg laying when the song was broadcast from inside a male model located away from the nest. However, this effect was only obtained when a second, silent male model was situated on the edge of the nest. If the song was broadcast from the male near the nest, there was no rise in estrogen levels.

A procedure for an automated measurement of song similarity
Article Abstract:
Assessment of the song similarity amongst single species of songbirds is accepted as a way of describing and measuring similarities between the songs of tutors and pupils. However, it can be difficult to quantify the similarity. A new, fully automatic procedure for measuring song similarity is presented.
