Submillimetre-wavelength detection of dusty star-forming galaxies at high redshift
Article Abstract:
High-redshift optical galaxy searches have become more successful in revealing significant galaxy populations that are likely to be in the early stages of evolution. The global star formation rate (SFR) inferred omits certain fainter sources, and the effects of dust can lead SFRs to be grossly underestimated. A deep survey of a blank region of sky was undertaken at submillimetre wavelengths, and luminous sources in the 850 mum band were detected. If their spectra is similar to low-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies and are mainly powered by star formation, they must be converting over 100 solar masses of gas each year into stars.

A population of very diffuse lyman-alpha clouds as the origin of the He+ absorption signal in the intergalactic medium
Article Abstract:
Lyman-alpha clouds may cause the production of He+ trough in the spectrum of Q0302 - 003. This opacity in turn is capable of producing a self-consistently ultra-violet flux at these redshifts. The analysis of the structure of the optical depths, t(He II)/ t(HI) = 20, shows the existence of many low-column-density (2x10 raised to power 12 per square cm) neutral hydrogen clouds in the intergalactic medium.
