Penguins disturbed by tourists
Article Abstract:
A.J. Nimon's research group contested results that Adelie penguins were disturbed by tourists based on research with gentoo penguins using a heart rate monitor in an artificial egg. However, not only can results from one species not be automatically applied to another, but their own work showed evidence that the gentoo were disturbed by humans. Nimon's method was faulty because often the fear reaction involves leaving the nest, which invalidates the results while the gentoo penguins were also only exposed to one human at a time, not the equivalent of a boat-load wandering the nesting grounds.
