Perturbation of vast ecosystems in the absence of adequate science: Alaska's Arctic Refuge
Article Abstract:
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) of Alaska and perturbation of vast ecosystems in the absence of adequate science are discussed with attention to a study of what is known about ANWR ecology. Systematic databases on its resources are not available. It cannot be compared to the Serengeti or Yellowstone, and to act in the area without more information is like planning surgery without patient records/history. Carnivore studies should cover the Arctic fox, grizzlies, polar bears, and wolverines, and only the caribou, which use the coastal plain for about 6 weeks of the year, have been extensively studied. Graphs show percentages of biological studies of species in Holarctic environments by category and by species.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of endangered species hotspots in the United States
Article Abstract:
Spatiotemporal dynamics of hotspots for endangered species have been studied in the United States. Hotspots, where it is thought by many that scarce resources should be used, are areas with high number of species, that is, richness, with rare, threatened or endemic species, or with threatened species and/or with high threat to species survival. If the areas change, however, this would not be as valuable an approach. They do, it appears, change somewhat, but are a useful tool for guiding conservation efforts.

Toward a robust natural imperative for conservation
Article Abstract:
The nature of naturalness in an increasingly de-naturalized world is discussed in light of the different attitudes of different groups with different agendas for conservation in the twenty-first century. The times when conditions were free of human influence on ecosystems have been suggested as benchmarks for naturalness. Incorporating humans into nature is perhaps a more compelling imperative.
