Pictures, words and the brain
Article Abstract:
Semantic processing of pictures and words in aphasic disorders facilitates understanding of the functional organization of lexical and syntactic brain processes. A multiple semantics theory involving visual and verbal semantic systems, and a unitary semantic theory involving neural mechanisms are used for explaining brain functioning in optic aphasia. Research provides support to the unitary theory. The components of the two theories, and the brain areas involved in processing semantic information are discussed.

The brain's dictionary
Article Abstract:
Lexical knowledge is organized in the form of semantic categories in specific areas of the left temporal lobe. Abstract lexical representations are the link between conceptual knowledge and phonological form of words. Brain damage may cause selective depletion in lexical retrieval but the semantic processing remain unaffected. Positron emission tomographic analysis indicates that the lexical representation are modality independent as they specify the words of language independent of phonological form.

Separable processing of consonants and vowels
Article Abstract:
Evidence for the possible categorical distinction between consonants and vowels in the brain is provided. The performance of two Italian-speaking aphasics with contrasting, selective difficulties in producing vowels and consonants, was examined, and their performance producing individual consonants was independent of the sonority value and feature properties of the consonants.
