Planning rejection leaves British nuclear waste plans in disarray
Article Abstract:
British nuclear fuel disposal company Nirex has had its plan for an underground experimental research laboratory at Sellafield, England, rejected by the government on the grounds that insufficient surface-based geological investigations have been carried out. The decision has been backed by environmental groups. A leaked internal memo from Nirex's director for science, John Holmes, is believed to have been a factor in the rejection, appearing to acknowledge that scientific uncertainties made it difficult to make a case for the site. Nirex will have to seek another site for the disposal of the waste from nuclear power stations.

Africa splits over bar to patents on plants
Article Abstract:
The Africa-wide consensus to limit the patenting of plant varieties by overseas companies, has been put off course by the decision of representatives of some French speaking countries to recommend a version of the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The Rural Advancement Foundation International based in Canada, an environmentalist organization, is calling on governments to stay out of UPOV, claiming that it would stop small farmers saving seeds for re-use. However UPOV claims that it would enable subsistence farmers to save seeds for replanting.

Nuclear blast from the past?
Article Abstract:
A fire accident at a nuclear weapons store in the UK in 1956 almost caused the detonation of a nuclear bomb, similar to that dropped at Nagasaki in 1945. The accident was caused by the collision of a B47 bomber carrying a nuclear weapon with a weapons store in Greenham Common, Berkshire. Reports from a study reveal the existence of high levels of enriched uranium beyond the perimeters of Berkshire. Accidents at UK's nuclear installations have been kept a secret.
