Decline of the red-winged blackbird population in Ohio correlated to changes in agriculture (1965-1996)
Article Abstract:
Research shows that red-winged blackbird declines in Ohio can be attributed to the conversion of land for agricultural use and earlier hay harvesting dates. Both factors have reduced the blackbird's habitat, resulting in a 53% decrease in the species' breeding population.

Anthraquinone formulation (Flight Control) shows promise as avian feeding repellent
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of Flight Control (FC), which contains 50% anthraquinone, as a repellent for Canada geese and as a seed-treatment repellent for brown-headed cowbirds in northern Ohio was evaluated. FC was found to be repellent to cowbirds at all levels. Results suggested that FC is an effective foraging repellent for Canada geese in a 7-day experiment and for brown-headed cowbirds as a seed repellent in aviary experiments. FC also showed promise as an avian feeding repellent.

Plant growth regulator 'Stronghold' enhances repellency of anthraquinone formulation, 'Flight Control', to Canada Geese
Article Abstract:
Resident giant Canadian geese can cause problems at airports, parks and elsewhere, and there is a need to tackle the problem without killing the geese. Three experiments have shown that 'Stronghold', a plant growth regulator, can increase the effectiveness of a repellent called 'Flight Control'. Each experiment involved 24 birds. Birds are less likely to forage on plots treated with these formulations. The repellency persisted 22 days following treatment.
