Plant invasion of newly exposed hypersaline Dead Sea shores
Article Abstract:
The plants growing in the soil exposed by the decreasing level of the Dead Sea use flood water and not the highly saline water present in the soil which has two to three times more salt than the ocean water. Soil samples collected in summer and the beginning of winter contained a mixture of saline and flood water while the plant tissues contained water which was less saline than the soil water. These results show that the plants use flood water either from its reservoirs or when it becomes available after the first winter rains.

Using GFP to study virus invasion and spread in plant tissues
Article Abstract:
The spread of plant viruses at both cellular and whole-plant level can be studied using low-magnification lenses combined with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The use of beta-glucuronidase (GUS), as a marker protein, enables the virus to be localized in specific tissues and cells, but this is a destructive process. The green fluorescent protein (GFP) from Aequorea victoria can be used to investigate the viral infection process, and the use of a potato virus X-based vector to express GFP is reported.

Charting the shores of nuclear stability
Article Abstract:
The new element Z = 14 was created at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia through nuclear fusion, by bombarding a heavy plutonium isotope with a beam of (super48)Ca ions. A further experiment used a lighter plutonium isotope aiming to give a nucleus with 114 protons and 173 neutrons. At the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory in the US an experiment adopted a (super208)Pb target with a closed shell of neutrons N = 126 and of protons Z = 82, producing a stable nucleus.
