Plowed under: California's burrowing owl lives on prime real estate; as its habitat vanishes, so will the bird
Article Abstract:
The burrowing owl, a ten-inch tall bird that lives in the abandoned homes of prairie dogs, is a threatened species in many of its natural habitats, including California. An estimated 69% of the breeding pairs in one California study disappeared between 1981 and 1990. A combination of rodent eradication, which leaves the owls with no underground home, and development are the major threats to the birds' survival. It does have the attention of every conservationist group in the state, however, and is continually monitored.
