Plumage brightness as an indicator of parental care in northern cardinals
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to test the good parent and differential allocation models used to predict relationships between the degree of sexual ornamentation and parental care in the northern cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis. Results indicated that males' efforts in feeding nestlings were not correlated with male breast plumage color. In comparison, feeding efforts by females were positively correlated with female underwing plumage color. Brightness of the mate's breast color was inversely related to feeding efforts by females.

Female choice for age-specific plumage in the orchard oriole: implications for delayed plumage maturation
Article Abstract:
A study on the female choice for age-specific plumage in orchard orioles was conducted. Results indicate females preferred adult plumageover subadult plumage. Reasons for this preference could be mate quality characterized by ability to defend high-quality territory and quality of prenatal care. Plumage being a convenient indicator of age. Thus subadults are at a disadvantage in sexual selection because of their plumage.
