Population viability analysis for red-cockaded woodpeckers in the Georgia Piedmont
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to measure the population size of the red-cockaded woodpecker, Picoides borealis, on the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge and Hitchiti Experimental Forest in Georgia by using population viability analysis. The population size of newly banded and unbanded birds were analyzed based on two demographic parameters: population dynamics and extinction. Results of the study suggest that red-cockaded populations in PNWR-HEF face no danger of extinction.

Finless porpoise abundance in Omura Bay, Japan: estimation from aerial sighting surveys
Article Abstract:
The existence of the finless porpoise, found in Japan and other parts of Asia, is being threatened by being caught incidentally in fishing nets. A new study seeks to determine the abundance of porpoise in Japan's Omura Bay, which is increasingly suffering from water pollution, and the effects of human activities on the species. Aerial surveys suggest that there are just 187 finless porpoise in the bay, raising concerns about their future viability.

Bias in Canada goose population size estimates from sighting data
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to estimate the population size of Canada goose from sighting data compiled using capture-recapture methods. Total population size was estimated as the ratio of total geese marked and unmarked per marked goose in the population. Monte Carlo simulation was also used to determine the potential bias in the population size estimates. The results showed that bias in population size estimates are due to unverified sightings.
