Positive feedbacks among forest fragmentation, drought, and climate change in the Amazon
Article Abstract:
The effects of strong El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) drought on fragmented forests in the central Amazon and the potential for positive feedbacks among forest loss, fragmentation, fire, and regional climate change are presented. The results show that negative synergisms among Amazonian forest fragmentation, fire, and regional climate change poses an even more serious threat in the future.

Amazonian tree mortality during the 1997 EL Nino drought
Article Abstract:
The effects of an exceptionally severe EL Nino drought on mortality rates of trees in intact rain forest in Amazon Basin in 1997 are assessed. It is revealed that trees dying during the drought did not differ significantly in size and that intact Amazonian rainforests are relatively resistant to severe EL Nino events.

Long-Term Landscape Change and Bird Abundance in Amazonian Rainforest Fragments
Article Abstract:
Data on bird population declines in the Amazonian region are presented. Some declines reached more than 95 % even in old second growth and continuous forest landscapes. Results also show that classifying areas into "forest" and "non-forest" categories excludes needed data regarding the region's matrix.
