Predicting patterns of crop damage by wildlife around Kibale National Park, Uganda
Article Abstract:
Loss of crops to wildlife and livestock was monitored for two years in six villages around Kibale National Park, Uganda. Eighty-five percent of the events were caused by five species of wildlife: baboons, bushpigs, redtail monkeys, chimpanzees and elephants. The best predictor of crop damage was distance from the forest edge. Legal prohibitions on killing wildlife have heightened the farmers' perception of risk of crop damage by wildlife.

Application of extinction and conservation theories for forest birds in Nicaragua
Article Abstract:
The use of a logistic regression to find out which natural-history characteristics are most important in predicting a list of threatened birds known to occur in Nicaragua is reported. Results reveal that forest birds in central Nicaragua, may be the most vulnerable to local extinction because of low forest cover within decreed reserves, and establishment of these reserves deserves a high priority.

Conservation in a region of political instability: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
Article Abstract:
An assessment is presented on citizen participation in managing the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda. Citizen participation is viewed as having a positive effect, as it has reduced the level of tension between residents who want access to the forest's resources, and the park's personnel who are charged with protecting those resources.
