Radiocesium patterns in wood duck eggs and nesting females in a contaminated reservoir
Article Abstract:
A measurement of whole-egg radiocesium (137Cs) levels and apportionment in the albumen, yolk and shell was made on 13 clutches of wood duck eggs whose nest boxes were in an abandoned reactor cooling reservoir. Over two years, whole-egg concentrations were at an average of 0.113 Becquerels (Bq)/gram wet mass. Of the egg components, albumen's concentration of 137Cs, at 1.096 Bq/g dry mass, was the highest. Shell, at 0.132 Bq/g dry mass, came next while yolk had the least concentration at 0.098. 137Cs levels in a breeding female wood duck and its clutches may mean foraging habit selection.

Relations of small mammal populations to even-aged shelterwood systems: a comment
Article Abstract:
Shelterwood harvesting was seen by Von Trebra et al as unlikely to have a negative impact on populations of small mammals, but criticisms can be made of their experimental design. Ecological scale is a key issue, and the results reported by Von Trebra may not have been a reflection of the condition of the habitat of treatment units, or individual experimental blocks. There are recommendation for forest management arising from this analysis.
