Complex male display and female choice in the spotted bowerbird: specialized functions for different bower decorations
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to examine the relationship between male display traits and mate selection in the spotted bowerbird, Chlamydera maculata. The results revealed that mating success of male bowerbirds was determined by the temporal spacing of the bones and glass. Females were observed to prefer males with higher counts of bones and glass. It is suggested that male bowerbirds used this information to improve their ability to court and mate with female bowerbirds.

Preferences for colored bower decorations can be explained in a nonsexual context
Article Abstract:
The claim that male secondary sexual traits evolved to exploit biases in the female's sensory system by the sensory bias model of sexual selection is examined. However, results suggest that choice of bower decoration color may have evolved to exploit a bias in the female's sensory system, which is originally shaped by selection on foraging practices.
