Prizes fail to quell disquiet over UK policy
Article Abstract:
The British government's controversial decision to transfer the Office of Science and Technology from the Cabinet Office to the Dept of Trade and Industry has concerned researchers who think only industry-oriented research will be supported. The Extend Quality Life (EQuAL) proposal to encourage the integration of industry, science and society lacks a clear implementation strategy and functional details have not been worked out, raising doubts about the usefulness and the validity of its claims.

Physics bears the brunt of research council's accountability demands
Article Abstract:
British physicists are incensed over plans by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to cut their funding by almost 4% below projected levels towards 1998. EPSRC officials explained that the cuts are intended to force physicists to be more innovative and develop more links with industry. Physicists counter that the council's move reflects its lack of understanding of how physics contributes to economic growth by making developments in various industries.

UK rejects call for more systematic biology cash
Article Abstract:
The British government rejected the House of Lords' demands for more funding for systematic biology. The government's Office of Science and Technology acknowledged that area's importance for biodiversity and the environment, but will not promise even to maintain current funding levels. Instead it proposes to review microbial culture collection, and to create a national forum on the field. It will also seek funds from the Commission of the European Communities.
