Proteorhodopsin lateral gene transfer between marine planktonic bacteria and archaea
Article Abstract:
The presence and distribution of proteorhodopsin genes in Archaea affiliated with the order Thermoplasmatales, in the ocean's upper water column is reported. The genomic context and phylogenetic relationships indicate its probable lateral transfer between planktonic Bacteria and Archaea.

Proteorhodopsin phototrophy in the ocean
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to demonstrate the presence in oceanic surface waters of co-existing surface- and deep-water clades of proteorhodopsin-based phototrophs. The energy-producing pigments of these phototrophs are spectrally tuned to either shallow or deeper water light fields.

Reconstructing the wild types
Article Abstract:
Researchers use production-scale genome to take direct observation of native microbial assemblages. This approach consists entirely of the whole-genome shotgun method.
