Proximate costs of fighting in male cichlid fish: the role of injuries and energy metabolism
Article Abstract:
The function of injury and energy metabolism during fights between male cichlid fish, Tilapia zillii, was investigated. With respect to injuries incurred during fights, scale loss differed depending on whether the winner was smaller or larger than its opponent. Smaller winners inflicted substantially larger damages on their opponents than they receive. With respect to energy metabolism, escalated fighting caused a substantial reduction in total sugar reserves in the muscle and the liver.

Fighting and assessment in male cichlid fish: the effects of asymmetries in gonadal state and body size
Article Abstract:
The relationship of territorial fighting in cichlid fish, Tilapia zillii, with relative body size and gonad weight was investigated. Findings showed that relative gonad weight was a much stronger indicator of fight outcome than relative body size. This indicated that males with larger gonads fight harder to defend their territory. Fishes with smaller weight fight harder as indicated by the negative correlation between weight asymmetry and the proportion of bites inflicted by the winner.

Fighting behaviour, vigilance and predation risk in the cichlid fish Nannacara anomala
Article Abstract:
The predatory behavior of the cichlid fish, Nannacara anomala, was studied to determine the influence of the breaks in the mouth-wrestling phase on the contestants' ability to sense an approaching model predator and the effects of this model on the contestants' decisions during the fight. The males modified their fighting tendencies after exposure to the model predator. Moreover, introduction of the model predator substantially decreased the duration and frequency of the bouts.
