Publishers map out a way forward in response to free online archives
Article Abstract:
Leading scientific publishers have agreed to connect references in articles they publish with the source papers in their respective publications. Some observers see this initiative as a challenge to projects to provide the primary literature free of charge to everybody. Such projects include PubMed Central, under development by the US National Institutes of Health and the European Molecular Biology Organization. If the deal goes ahead, there will be a web of journal titles owned by different publishers.

Nuclear love affair loses its charm
Article Abstract:
France's nuclear power policy has been thrown into question with the announcement by Socialist prime Minister Lionel Jospin that the 1,250 MW Superphenix commercial-scale fast-breeder nuclear reactor will be closed. Superphenix, built by consortium NERSA at a cost of FFr60 billion, has only operated intermittently since its opening in 1986. The decision puts the future of the La Hague nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in jeopardy. Nuclear power accounts for 77% of French electricity output.
