Quake-spotting 'telescope' may map North American continent
Article Abstract:
Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) is seeking funding for an experimental seismology facility known as USArray. This would be the largest project undertaken by IRIS, which is responsible for coordinating the resources of member institutions to ensure that seismology research is undertaken cost-effectively. The portable array will require at least 400 seismometers. These will record waves from near and distant earthquakes, thus imaging the crust and mantle of the Earth.

The US is continuing with proposals to develop a Biodiversity Observatory Network (BON). The proposed network of sites throughout the country would act a weather stations, monitoring ecological and systematic factors, and are part of plans for a National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). The National Science Foundation is aiming to combine the collecting capabilities with long term analyses from ecologists, to provide an evolving picture of biodiversity.

Peers under pressure
Article Abstract:
Problems associated with peer review of scientific research are discussed. Some observers believe that professional jealousies can hamper the review process, in some cases encouraging discoveries to be leaked before official publication. There is particular potential for abuse in rapidly developing sectors such as molecular biology.
